Southern Belle Dresses

A southern belle dress should create a vision of grace and elegance. This is depicted by the design of the hoops and layers of ruffles on the skirt. To accessories the dress the ladies should carry along a parasol and tie their long hairs into a banana curl. The dresses are made from organza or a filmy material to emanate an airy dress.

When designing a southern belle dress the following materials are necessary; an organza fabric, ribbons, elastic, zipper, a hoop or a square dancing crinoline skirt and the sewing machinery. First the back and front pieces of the bodice are cut. The back part is divided into two halves to create room for the attachment of a zipper. Four cap sleeves, two for each side are then cut and assembled onto the bodice.

Next a ruffle which should act as a neck lining is cut from the same material. Elastic is added along the top to puff up the ruffle. Two other sets of ruffles are created and sewed on the sides of the bodice creating a curve downwards from the shoulders to the sharp point of the waist. Satin bows are then added on the shoulder above the ruffle paving way for the attachment of the cap sleeve to the bodice.

The skirts top layer is designed with several panels gathered by elastic on the waist to create fullness. A ruffle is added along the bottom of the skirt’s top layer. The length of the skirt should hang below the knees. The back side of the skirt is then attached to the front part. To create the dress, the skirt is attached to the bodice while sewing the pointed side of the waist above the waistband of the skirt. Lastly a crinoline is added to emphasize more on the fullness of the dress.
